Learn the basics of traditional weaving techniques. Explore the relationships between yarn size, texture and color as you practice a variety of beginning weaving techniques such as balance weave, twill and herringbone. Complete a sampler on a frame loom, which is yours to keep. Please bring a heavy dinner fork and scissors.

Combine silk and merino wool to create a special scarf to use or give as a gift. Making felt requires standing and some exertion to mat, condense and press the roving into a non-woven cloth. The finished piece is approximately 90"x 18". Please bring a bath towel. All levels of creative ability are welcome.

Using simple materials and techniques inspired from ones used more than 600 years ago, decorate 14” wide fabric with freestyle designs using paint, stencils and stamps. Learn about the significance of certain motifs, patterns and color that reveal the wearer's gender, age, status, wealth and taste in traditional Japanese Kimono. Create your own meaningful, symbolic narrative to tell your story on the fabric panels. Sew this fabric to create your own kimono-like jacket. Materials list provided upon registration.

Yo-yos are gathered circles of cloth secured with a running stitch. They are a sensational embellishment for wall art, garments and accessories (think bags, hats, jewelry). This workshop features yo-yo construction and an array of simple embroidery stitches that serve as a menu for endless combinations in attaching the yo-yos to a hand-dyed wool background. Karen will display textile wall art, bags and jewelry as described. Materials list provided upon registration.

Hats are back and what better way to embrace the trend than by making your own fabulous fascinator or charming cocktail hat? Channel your inner fashionista while learning basic millinery techniques and the art of hand-stitching. You will craft your hat using felt, feathers, netting, grosgrain and more. Little or no sewing experience required. Class size is limited and will be held at Jill's studio in Solana Beach. Location and directions given upon registration.

Learn the basics of machine sewing while making HomeEc Studio's favorite Tote Bag in the shopper style. Learn the anatomy of the sewing machine as well as bobbin and machine preparation. You’ll practice stitches before sewing your fully lined cotton canvas tote bag with cotton straps. To add a depth, you will learn how to box the corners of the bag. This is a great class for the absolute beginner and novice, and for those who need a refresher course in machine sewing. Bring your sewing machine or you may borrow one from Roselle. A limited number of machines are available for an additional fee. All other materials are provided.
