Time will be spent on basic pattern reading, choosing the right tools and yarn for any project, and trouble-shooting. Using blues and/or greens for unity and support of your environment, ecology and science, as well as scientists' efforts to protect this Earth, knit a hat for the massive global March For Science on Earth Day, April 22, 2017. Create a 60‘s and 70’s inspired, richly textured and tactile piece of fiber art. Think: fringe and shaggy. Learn basic weaving techniques or, if you already know how to weave, tighten up your skills with more advanced work. Using a frame loom, weave your free-form, organic wall hanging. Indigo Dyeing has been used across the world for thousands of years. The Indigo plant makes a variety of shades of blue, commonly associated with denim. Learn the history and process of indigo dyeing and Shibori, the Japanese tradition of folding and manipulating fabrics to make patterns for dyeing. Dye napkins, scarves, shirts and yardage of natural fabrics like cotton, linen and silk. All fabric and dyeing materials will be provided. If you want, you may bring additional clothing and fabric to dye.

In this fun, hands-on workshop, learn a few basic macrame knots to create this super groovy boho chic plant hanger. Macrame is a form of textile-making using knotting rather than weaving or knitting. Explore square knot, alternating square knot, spiral knot and gathering knot. With the versatile techniques taught in this class, you will be able to create belts, purses, jewelry, room dividers and more!! All materials will be provided. Bring your creativity and be ready to have fun!

Have fun with color, pattern and abstract design. Learn simple techniques using both wet and dry brush work with silk paints, direct color mixing, and salt application on silk scarf blanks. Adding salt creates spontaneous textures. Detailed work can be added with brush work or fabric markers. Receive easy heat setting, care instruction and reference handouts. Please wear your painting clothes or bring an apron.

Using heat set non-toxic dyes, learn a simple and fast technique for hand painting on Habotai silk. As dye dries on the fabric, you’ll see beautiful colors and textures form. The silk can be used as a scarf to wear or as a decoration for your home. What a quick, simple, fun and easy way to get your creative groove going! Please wear painting clothes or bring your apron. All supplies, including two 8" x 54" scarves, will be provided. After class, enjoy a stroll through Liberty Station’s galleries, studios, museums and restaurants.

In this fun workshop, learn basic embroidery stitches and more; the running, chain, buttonhole, french knot, lazy daisy, and cross stitches. So easy to learn. Master how to thread a needle, use an embroidery hoop and make a knot to secure your stitches. In addition, learn how to combine the stitches into a pleasing design where buttons are the centerpiece. Even if you've never sewn before, Helene will guide you until you feel that you have mastered each stitch. Spend a little time working with beautiful silk ribbon embroidery, which is a bit different that regular embroidery floss. Please bring a piece of clothing on which to embroider; a blouse, jacket or pants whose fabric is not knit.

Learn the basics of silk ribbon embroidery, an old romantic art of beautiful floral motifs and decorative hand-stitched patterns. Master threading the needle, use of an embroidery hoop as well as beginning stitches such as the silk ribbon stitch, detached chain and French knot. With these skills, you can create beautiful designs to make original jewelry or to decorate your clothing. Even if you have never sewed before, you will find this special type of embroidery easy to learn and beautiful to behold.

NUNO FELTED SCARF
Combine silk and merino wool to create a special scarf to use or give as a gift. Making felt requires standing and some exertion to mat, condense and press the roving into a non-woven cloth. The finished piece is approximately 90"x 18". Please bring a bath towel. All levels of creative ability are welcome.

CURLY GIRL HAIR TOWEL
Use textile paints, pens, brushes and stamps to decorate and personalize a soft cotton towel to gently squeeze water from your curly locks after cleansing and conditioning. Learn to print or paint playful curly patterns and designs. Curly hair is naturally dry and any extra handling causes frizz by ruffling your hair’s cuticles. Curly hair also needs all the moisture it can get and terry cloth towels absorb too much. Keep those curls curly and defined by using your personalized smooth cotton fabric to scrunch and curl.

Choose a theme for your prayer, dream or wish. Add words and embellish your fabric flag with paper, paint, embroidery, buttons, beads, markers, etc. Hang your flags outside or in your window. It is believed that the prayers on the flags are lifted up and spread throughout the universe as they flutter in the wind. Everyone who is touched by that wind, is touched by the prayers.
